How Generosity and Faith Are Fueling Disciple-Making Movements in Africa

Disciples are multiplying! DMI’s online training has become a tool the Lord has used in ways far beyond what we imagined. Back in 2019, our team felt led to take the Disciple Making Movements training, which we had only offered in person, and bring it online. Through this platform, God opened doors to places that were once difficult or dangerous to reach, including closed nations and remote communities. It also allowed passionate disciple-makers to find us, creating a two-way connection across the globe.

Gathering in Person

While our online training and one-on-one virtual coaching continue to expand, we also place a high value on onsite training. When a region shows interest in discipleship, our trainers travel there in person. These face-to-face gatherings give leaders space to meet, pray, and learn together. Disciple makers also receive advanced training in disciple-making principles. Above all, they build deeper relationships and community, so our local leaders no longer feel isolated. In March 2026, we celebrated a major milestone: our first-ever Global Gathering for the Disciple Makers Increase family in Kenya. Prayer partners, donors, movement leaders, board members, and team members came together to worship, pray, share meals, celebrate God’s work, and cast vision for the future.

Returning to Togo

That time together in Kenya inspired us to host more in-person gatherings, which led directly to our recent training in Togo. Togo holds a special place in our hearts. After an onsite training there in May 2025, we saw a surge in disciple-making and multiplication across the area. A few weeks ago, we were privileged to return for an African Leadership Team meeting and a Movement Leaders Training. Our leaders connected, learned from one another, and encouraged each other in the work.

Here is a glimpse into what took place during this impactful time:

Generosity is a characteristic of revival and one of Jesus’ commands.  In a recent movement leaders training in West Africa, 46 movement leaders and disciple-makers who are close to movement status (at 3rd or 4th generation) gathered to learn and grow.

Using an oral culture-friendly tool developed first by Generous Church and a movement in Ethiopia, we spent our mornings studying the word, stories, doing practical exercises and learning what it means to be generous, no matter how much we have or do not have.

One rule was put in place.  During this training, no one is allowed to ask for money.  The trainer would not ask for money, and the trainees could not ask each other for money.  It was a safe place to simply learn from God’s Word about generosity.

Everyone enjoyed doing the 7 motions that described the truths of what they were learning.

  • God owns it all
  • God gave first
  • Giving comes from love for God
  • Listen for God’s will
  • Giving brings joy
  • God loves to provide
  • Heaven is our home

Here is a glimpse into the training. Click here to watch some testimonies from some of the disciple makers who attended.

Giving Out of Love: A Powerful Lesson from Togo

Our founder, Cynthia Anderson, and her husband Todd did an impromptu drama showing the difference between giving to your wife out of duty, out of transaction, and out of love.  Duty means giving because you should.  Transaction was illustrated by buying your wife something so she will cook you a good meal.  Love is when you give, not expecting to receive back.  This illustration really resonated with our trainees as they identified how many times they were giving out of duty or with a transaction mindset.

Together with Cynthia, other African DMI leadership team members joined in training on this topic and the result was powerful.  On the second day, one of the trainees, Stephen, got a message about someone in need.  His bank account was very low, but he decided to take a risk and be generous, giving to his friend.  That very day, an opportunity to make money through a business opportunity landed much more than he had given into his account.  God was truly showing Himself to be faithful.

Brother Stephen shared a powerful testimony of how the movement training immediately affected his life. Click here to watch the full video.

Thank You for Making Movement Leader Training in Togo Possible

Bible stories like the Widow at Zarephath were acted out with a distinct African flair that brought both laughter and revelation.

At the close, trainees were told an African story about a bird in the hand to illustrate that they now had a choice to make.  Would they pass on what they had been trained in?  One by one, trainees made action steps and set goals of who they would go and train in this and when.  Pray with us that generosity would characterize these movements and they would be blessed by the joy of giving.

Thank you to those who gave to make this training possible.  One of the trainees wrote, “Thank you so much for your hard work, dedication, and every contribution you have made to make this training a success. May God continue to bless you and your family abundantly, strengthen you in your service, and reward you for your kindness and generosity.”  To that we say a big Amen!
